The end of July brings with it the anniversary of skateboarding’s sparking of the Paris Olympic fuse with both Men’s and Women’s Street bringing a riot of colour and sound to Place De La Concorde in what was unquestionably one of the highlights of the entire enormously successful Games.
Cast your mind back: Street was one of the show openers for the entire event, but had to be pushed back after the monumental downpour which all but extinguished that vast elaborate opening ceremony.
The twenty-four hour rain delay gave way to a baking contest afternoon full not just of dreams fulfilled but upsets and surprises, too- from Daniela Terol flying in at zero notice to replace injured Jazmin Alvarez, to Gustavo Ribeiro colliding with an unwary cameraman and Jagger Eaton transgressing the rules by trying to wax a ledge before his last trick- which was unsuccessful, regardless.
The enormous Field Of Play favoured those with power on their side, and a lot of skateboarders who had been successful along the Road To Paris found that their personal journey dwindled before the finals came around in what was in the end a test not just of ability but years-long endurance.
While the Women’s Street contest was won emphatically by Japan’s Coco Yoshizawa who was almost 7 points clear of second place Liz Akama, and almost 20 clear of 3rd place Rayssa Leal, Men’s was a closer-run affair.
Jagger Eaton, who was at his bulletproof finest in Paris was beaten into silver by Yuto Horigome’s unbelievable last-gasp redemption heroics which provided the entire Games’ most enduring image (in our biased opinion). Bronze went to Nyjah Huston who despite having had a patchy Olympic Qualifier Series turned up as his best self for Snoop Dogg and the world to witness.
