LA28 Qualification Schedule Release

Written by Niall Neeson

World Skate would hereby like to announce the Olympic qualification system rules in the disciplines of Skateboarding Park and Skateboarding Street for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

As with the Paris cycle, the pathway will run for two full years (11th June 2026 -11th June 2028)- and will consist of two distinct phases, as outlined below.

Olympic Qualification Phase 1

(11th June 2026- 31st March 2028)

The qualification pathway will once again consist of our Phase 1, the World Skateboarding Tour, which as ever is the sole funnel into Phase 2.

Each national team can register up to 3 athletes per WST event.

Up to 6 additional athletes per nation may earn entry by ranking in the World Skateboarding Ranking top 30 as of 60 days before the start of said event.

The World Skateboarding Ranking takes into account best results from prior 18 months of WST events.

Olympic Qualification Phase 2

(1st April 2028- 11th June 2028)

Phase 2 will once again consist of a separate contest series for the top 44 in each discipline and gender as determined by World Skate.

At this point, each field will be limited to a maximum of 6 athletes per country.

These 176 athletes will each be given an evenly-graduated Phase 2 points baseline at the outset, determined by their qualification position within the eligible 44 athletes in their discipline going on to form Phase 2.

This standardised point differentiation rewards athletes’ achievements within Phase 1, setting the scene for Phase 2 events which are crucial towards qualifying to the Games.

Final Olympic Selection

At the end of Phase 2, each field will be halved to 22 Olympic competitors under Phase 2 point attributions and the same established Olympic athlete selection criteria from the Paris cycle which govern National quotas, Continental representation, Host nation allocation and Universality quota- which is to say:

1) a maximum of 3 athletes per NOC

2) at least 1 athlete per continent

3) at least 1 athlete from the host country, if not already qualified through ranking

4) 1 spot for eligible athletes from underrepresented countries (Universality Quota)

In the interests of clarity and simplicity of communication, we have highlighted some additional answers to FAQ’s below:

  • The World Skateboarding Tour officially kicks off its Road To LA28 Phase 1 with the WST Rome World Cup this June.
  • A full breakdown of World Skateboarding Ranking rules and point allocation tables will be released before the beginning of the qualification period.
  • Universality Places (also sometimes referred to as Universality Quotas) are designed to increase the diversity of participating athletes from underrepresented National Olympic Committees and will once again be available within both skateboarding disciplines at the LA28 Olympic Games as per previous Olympic cycles- and about which you can read more here. If there is no athlete listed on the WSR on 11 June 2028, the WSR from 31 March 2028 will be used. Only one men's and one women's universality place per event is set to be made available to eligible National Olympic Committees for Los Angeles 2028.
  • To qualify for the Phase 2 Host Countries quota places, athletes must meet one of two ranking criteria: either they must be ranked in the top 75% of the WSR, or they must be ranked within the top 75 spots, whichever of the two yields the lowest ranking.
  • Phase 2 schedule to be announced upon finalisation by the IOC.
