Asian Championships 2026 Report!

Written by Niall Neeson

Last weekend saw the inaugural Asian Championships in Skateboarding Street and Park, held in the city of Meishan, in China’s Sichuan province.

This first-ever continental championship devoted solely to skateboarding within Asia marks a milestone for World Skate Asia, and serves as a feeder event for qualification to the upcoming Asian Games in Japan this September.

172 skateboarders entered the Asian Championships, covering Men’s, Women’s and a Junior division- among the nations represented were China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand.

While China dominated Park in both Men’s and Women’s divisions, it would prove to be a Korean double-whammy for first places in Street, with Thailand and Taiwan both getting podium representation alongside a single Chinese medal in Street for the mightily-impressive and ever-improving Yuanling Zhu, who has also made it into the finals of the last two World Skateboarding Tour stops.

Held in the 3,000- seater Meishan International Roller Skating and Skateboarding Centre and keenly observed by judging panels including World Skate's Renton Millar and Daniel Wenbo, this step-change in the calibre of skateboarding and organisation for a part of the world where the activity is mushrooming in popularity was hailed both by World Skate Asia and Sichuan’s Provinical Sports Bureau.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Huang Qiang, president of World Skate Asia declared "Skateboarding is a symbol of youth, creativity, and courage. From the streets to the Olympic Games, from city squares to the pinnacle of Asian competition, this sport is surging forward with unstoppable momentum across the world.”

In parallel, Chen Xingdong, deputy director-general of the Sichuan Provincial Sports Bureau, said his city intended to build on the success of this skateboarding extravaganza, adding: "We look forward to leveraging this event as an opportunity to deepen sports exchanges and cooperation across Asia and to jointly promote the high-quality development of skateboarding.”
